The hyperbolic sound of Miss Maud and her maid breathing and the material of their dresses rustling paired with the non-diegetic voice-over of Maud's mind where she says "I had to keep telling myself what she planned to do with me" represents their lesbian relationship to be very physical. However, due to the ideologies of the time period these physical desires had to be repressed, and the only way in which they can be sated is through imagination.
